I should not be feeling like this towards you. It's not right. Even though we both feel the same in similar ways, it can never happen I had these feelings for as long as I can remember, but sad to say, you are involved with someone else. My feelings at this point will always be one sided.
"Hurry and come downstairs. I made breakfast."
Food does sound good right now. I am hungry, but the more I think about that kiss we shared that night, the more butterflies burst out nearly making my stomach wanting to burst wide open causing me to lose my appetite. It was wrong to do, but it felt so right. They way his soft lips pressed against mine. I will never forget the way felt against mine.
"Breakfast smells so good." My mouth is literally making puddles on the table.
"You know what today is. It's a big day for you."
My heart drops. I completely forgot that I have a job interview with him! I am so not ready to see him or even be in the same room with him in that matter. I surely have to look my best so that means making a good impression of myself is the key.
"Charlotte." my mom says in the distance.
"Huh? Did you say something?"
My mom rolls her eyes at me and proceeds cleaning the kitchen. I run back to my room intensely looking for something appealing to wear. Of course, with my luck, I finally find something suitable after what feels like hours of searching. The interview doesn't start until 3:30 so I might as well just do my hair and makeup just to get that out of the way. In the meantime since its still early in the morning, I'll just set out my clothes over on the corner and clean my room. I'm praying I get this job so that I can save enough for my apartment. I can get a car later on in the future, but as of right now, the bus is a decent solution.
I have so many mixed feelings inside that I don't know what to do to myself. Now that everything is prepped I can focus on what I'm going to say in front of my mirror. Just as I am about to begin practicing, he knocks on my window. Charlotte, you have to play it cool. You don't want to screw anything up or make things awkward.
"Toby! What are you doing here?" I quietly scream.
"I just wanted to wish you luck on the interview today. I'll go easy on you I promise." he winks.
"No." I nod. "Don't do that. Treat me like you would any other person for the interview. Besides, it's still pretty early."
"I know, but I know you. You're different." he smiles.
Bursts of butterflies wanna shoot out of my ass right now. My heart wants to climb out from my throat. I hope I'm not making it obvious.
"Hey, are you okay? You look a bit sick."
He looks at me with worry in his eyes.
"Yeah, I'm good. It's just I-"
"Charlotte! I need you for a sec!" my mom shouts interrupting me.
"I guess I'll see you soon." He climbs out the window. "Oh by the way, you look sexy." He then jumps down and I close my window. I can't believe he said that. My poor heart.
"CHARLOTTE!" my mom screams.
"I'M COMING! GIVE ME A SEC!" I shout.
I take my time walking down the steps and turns out my mother didn't need my help for anything. She called me down because there, standing right in front of me is my dad finally back from traveling overseas. Tears rush down my cheeks like bowling balls. I run up to him and hug him tight. Time flies by as I catch up with my dad.
"Charlotte, it's time for you to get ready for your interview."
"Thanks mom. I totally forgot."
"Good luck at your interview sweety." my dad smiles.
I give him one last hug.
I run upstairs and throw on my outfit. Luckily, I prepared ahead of time or else my ass would have been late. I scurry down these steps and my mom hands me her car keys.
"Thank you." I show a gesture smile.
I make sure I have everything and take it off. My heart is beating 1,000x faster then when Toby climbed into my bedroom window earlier. I pray I get this job. It would mean so much to me.
I make it at least ten minutes early. It's a very popular clothing store. As I walk through the doors, there he is talking to some girls. A customer I presume. As she hugs him goodbye, my heart drops. Although, my mind is telling me otherwise. It's only a one-sided thing. Toby is a giant flirt after all. Suddenly, he glances at me standing by the door.
"Hey! You made it just in time. Come. Follow me this way."
I follow him to the back of the store. It is so much nicer and neater than I thought. Who knew he can be so prepped and organized?
"Please, take a seat."
I guess he really is treating me how he would anyone else. That's good then. That means he does have a brain.
"I see here you have never had any work experience." his tone serious.
"Yes. That's correct."
"It also states that you are organized, bilingual, and very social." he adds.
Toby looks at me up and down.
"Is there something you find displeasing?"
"No. Not at all. Everything sitting in front of me looks really good."
"Well, that's really good to hear." I show off my smile.
Toby then nervously coughs and looks back down at my resume. I wonder what caused him to do so.
"Um, so...uh, everything looks good. How early can you start?"
"I can now." I smile.
"OK, well since today is not much of a full house, how about you come in on Monday and I'll give you the basics?"
"Wait, does this mean I got the job?"
Toby shows off his pearly smile. "Yes."
OH. MY. GOSH! I finally got my first job! Now I can start saving for my apartment. I can finish school and be able to pay everything off. This job has really great benefits so that's a bonus!
"Thank you so much! You will not regret this!"
After that, I rush back home since it's only a couple of miles away. I swing open the door, but my smile slowly disappears.
"Oh sweety, I'm sorry. He got called back in. It was a last minute thing."
Without a word, I walk quietly back to my room. I toss everything to the side of my bed and throw myself between the pillows.
"So, how did the job interview go?"
"It was great, actually. I got the job."
"Oh, congratulations sweety. I am so proud of you. Well, I'm not going to be home for a while. I don't know how long I'm going to be."
"Where are you going?" I ask concerning.
"I have to go across country for a few important meetings. I'm releasing a new book soon."
"I think you'll be fine here on your own." she smiles.
My mom kisses me goodnight.
"I'm leaving tonight, but I'll keep in touch to check up on you for sure."
"OK mom. I love you."
"I love you too."
Midnight rolls around and I still can't sleep. Next thing I know, something is tapping against my bedroom window. I open it to look around. Down below me I see Toby with roses and I believe champagne. I quickly run downstairs and open the front door to let him in.
"Toby? What are you doing here this late at night?"
"I wanted to celebrate with you on getting your first job."
"Come in. It's chilly outside." I shut the door behind him. "You know you didn't have to do this." I nervously smile.
"I wanted to. This is a big deal for you." he hands me the roses as he places the champagne bottle aside giving me a comforting smile.
"Thank you. These are very beautiful."
"So, where are your parents at?"
"My mom left to go across country and my dad got called back in the military. I'm going to be here by myself for a long time."
"I'm sorry to hear. Well, you know I'm here for you." he smiles.
My mind begins to feel cloudy. At this point, I had forgotten to take off my make up and throw my pj's on.
"Hey, will you excuse me? I need to go change."
Toby smiles and nods. I walk up the steps and rush to the bathroom. I wipe everything of and change into something more comfortable. As I slowly strip everything off of me, Toby walks in unannounced. I quickly try to cover myself, but I'm too late. Toby stops me midway.
"You know, for as long as I've known you, I've never noticed how beautiful your body was. You always had everything covered."
"What are you trying to say?" I look up at him; my eyebrows furrow.
"I'm saying that, ever since I have been in love with you, I've always wondered-" I cut him off holding my hands up.
My ears are playing games with me. Did he just confess his feelings towards me? It can't be. This HAS to be a prank of some kind. Maybe a dream at that matter. Toby leans in and-
*Alarm goes off*
I wake up with sweat dripping down my temples. I'm so confused. Was that really a dream?
"I never knew you talk in your sleep?" Toby smirks laying right beside me.
"What are you doing here?!" I scream.
"Relax. Your mom called me to stay here with you."
What? I'm so confused....My mom asked HIM to come and stay with me? Are we talking about the same women here?
"When did she ask you that?"
"Last night. Just a few minutes after she left. She called me to keep you company because you don't like being by yourself."
So not all of it was a dream after all...
"By the way...I hope you like..eat breakfast because I made some."
Why was his voice a bit shaky? What's gotten into him all of a sudden? I'm just hoping I didn't say anything weird in my sleep.
I get out of bed and head straight to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I feel his eyes follow my ever move but I brush that off as I put my hair in a high ponytail.
"Listen, I know we have known each other nearly since childhood and all...and I was thinking that now would be a good time to tell you something important."
Toby clears his throat.
"Charlotte, I was wondering...if..-"
Toby gets cut off by my phone ringing. He grabs it and puts it on silent.
"Hey, I'm getting hungry. Let's eat first and then you can tell me whatever it is that's important." I smile.
Disappointment and annoyance is shown in his brown eyes. My mind is telling me just with it but my heart is telling me otherwise. After breakfast, I head back to my room and get dressed. I have to go take care of a few errands.
"Where are you going?" he asks, voice deep and raspy.
"I have to run and take care of a few things." I say as I fix my bed.
Later that day, Toby hasn't said a word to me since I came back. I can't but think what he has to say but at the same time I'm nervous. What is going through that mind of his?
